Batteries contain sulfuric acid and lead. Use extreme caution when handling batteries. To prevent burn injury, use proper protective gear, such as gloves and safety glasses, or goggles when handling batteries.
Never attempt to open a sealed battery. When handling, and/or working with batteries, do not allow metal objects such as tools, jewelry, trunk lids, or toolboxes to touch the batter terminals, as it can cause explosive sparks or fire. Batteries emit explosive gas. Do not smoke or have an open flame around the batteries.
Operate your power wheelchair in well-ventilated areas only. Never use a battery that has been frozen or might have been frozen. Do not connect any devices, medical or otherwise, to the batteries or electrical system, except those supplied by Hoveround. Always use batteries of the same type and capacity for this power wheelchair. You can get Hoveround electric wheelchair replacement batteries online, or you can call us to speak with a Technical Support representative. Always dispose of batteries in accordance with EPA regulations.
Unplug each battery cable from the junction box. Remove the batteries from the base and place on a stable surface. Remove the battery straps by squeezing each side of the clip. Remove the strap, and set aside. Lift the battery cover and slide the cable inside of the cover at the same time. Take note of the position of the cables and fuses to ensure the correct reinstallation. Use the 2-7/16 wrench to loosen and remove the two terminal bolts, nuts, and washers. Be careful not to touch the tools on the battery terminals, as it could cause explosive sparks or fire.
Place the cable and fuse on the new battery in the same position as it was on the old battery. Make sure the black wire is connected to the negative battery terminal, and the red wire is connected to the positive battery terminal. Use the 2-7/16 inch wrench to tighten the two terminal bolts. Be sure not to touch the tools on the battery terminals, as it could cause explosive sparks or fire.
Reinstall the battery cover over the battery. Be sure the battery cables are not pinched between the cover, and the battery. Reinstall the battery strap. Place the batteries back on the unit, and plug in the cables.
