Many times a brake lever reset can resolve an issue that is preventing a power chair from operating.

MPV5 - The brake levers are located on the front of the power chair just above the footplate. To reset the brakes on the MPV5 make sure both levers are pushed to the down position then pull one lever at a time to the full up position.

FWD and XHD - The brake levers are located on the front of the Power Wheel Chair under the label that reads "Drive" and "Push". To reset the brakes on the FWD or XHD Power chair make sure both levers are pushed to the down position then pull one lever at a time to the full up position.

If the lights on the controller continue to flash or blink, check to make sure the controller is not locked.

  • Should my wheelchair tires be solid or should I use pneumatic tires on my wheelchair?

All Hoveround power wheelchairs come standard with front pneumatic drive tires ("inflatable tires") for the same reason that modern vehicles use inflatable tires: Comfort. Pneumatic tires simply provide power wheelchair users with a level of isolation from bumps and jarring debris that solid, flat-free tires cannot provide.
As a reminder, just as you would check your vehicle tires before taking a trip, you should do the same for the front drive tires on your Hoveround power wheelchair. Examine the treads for excessive wear and possible damaging debris. And once per week, check to make sure your tires are properly inflated to 45-50 PSI (pounds per square inch). Never operate your Hoveround on a flat drive tire.

Of course, Hoveround does offer a flat-free tire option if you prefer less maintenance and are willing to accept a slightly less comfortable ride.

If you have questions about your drive tires or if they ever need servicing, please contact the Hoveround Technical Support team at 1-800-96-HOVER (1-800-964-6837).
  • What do I need to know about pneumatic wheelchair tires?

All Hoveround power wheelchairs come standard with front pneumatic drive tires, or "inflatable tires." And just like other inflatable tires, you should check the pressure in your front drive tires and examine the treads for excessive wear or possibly damaging debris once a week. Make sure your pneumatic wheelchair tires are properly inflated to 45-50 PSI (pounds per square inch), and never operate your Hoveround on a flat drive tire.

If at any time your front drive tires need servicing, please contact the Hoveround Technical Support team at 1-800-96-HOVER (1-800-964-6837).

  • How long will it take to fully charge a power chair battery?

It usually takes around 8 hours for power wheelchair batteries to reach a full charge. However, brand new batteries might require 10 hours or more of charging.

Hoveround power chairs should only be charged using the portable Hoveround Multi-Stage Battery Charger. This charger is specifically designed to deliver the correct amount of charge without risk of overcharge.

  • How long will a full battery charge last?

Fully-charged batteries can be expected to hold a charge for several hours, with a potential range of approximately 10 to 20 miles. But, there are additional factors that impact the length of time a battery will sustain its power.

    • Type of batteries installed: Sealed, lead acid batteries are preferable
    • Age of batteries: Batteries over 18 months old may need to be replaced
    • Environment where chair is used: Terrain and grade impacts power drain
    • Weight of the rider: Rider's weight can affect the battery power
  • How do I know when the battery is running low?

Power wheelchairs are equipped with battery gauge lights, located on the surface of the joystick controller. These indicator lights will show the battery charge strength and will flash to indicate when the battery is fully charged.

Hoveround recommends using a multi-stage battery charger overnight and after every day of normal use to maintain the most optimal level of battery charge. When the chair is not being used, the battery should be kept as fully charged as possible. This will help extend the life of the batteries.

  • When should electric wheelchair batteries be replaced?

While there are many variables to consider, a set of new power chair batteries should last a minimum of six months, with a potential lifespan of 1 year or longer. However, if batteries begin to lose power quickly, experience a decrease in range, or suffer damage, the time may be right for power wheelchair replacement batteries.

Contact us at 1-800-96-HOVER for assistance with any battery problem. Arrangements might be made to evaluate and, if needed, replace the electric wheelchair batteries.¹

¹In home service calls may not be required for battery replacement. Contact Hoveround for details.
