When you rely on something every day – like a personal mobility vehicle to help prevent you from fallingaids in aging in place, and help you regain your independence – you will usually benefit from getting a replacement after a while to ensure that the power wheelchair is still safe and reliable. That’s why you should replace your Hoveround power wheelchair after five years -- and you can.

Most Hoverounds are well-used by their owners at the 5-year mark. And just like the power wheelchair you have now, your new one may also arrive at little to no cost to you. Remember, 9 out of 10 people get their Hoveround for little to no cost (Insurance coverage depends on medical necessity as determined by insurer. Valid doctor’s prescription is required.)

Should You Get a Replacement Hoveround Power Chair?
You’ve taken great care of your Hoveround power wheelchair, – but it’s quite possible that some of the moving parts inside your mobility vehicle have deteriorated and sustained wear from day-to-day usage over time. Can You Get a Replacement Hoveround Power Chair through Medicare?
If you have Medicare, you may be eligible to have your replacement Hoveround power wheelchair covered at least in part. Here are some facts about getting a replacement Hoveround power wheelchair through Medicare:

  • Medicare may cover a replacement power chair after it has reached its reasonable useful lifetime.
  • Reasonable useful lifetime (RUL) is estimated at, but no fewer than, five years. RUL begins on the date the recipient accepts the power wheelchair delivery.
  • Medicare defines irreparable wear as deterioration resulting from day-to-day usage that is unrelated to any specific event or incident.
  • Medicare treats the request for a power wheelchair replacement as a new order. This means you go through the process you did for your original Hoveround power wheelchair, which includes a face-to-face examination with your doctor and detailed documentation of medical necessity with your valid doctor’s prescription.
  • Replacement coverage for durable medical equipment, including power wheelchairs, is subject to review by Medicare, relative to case-by-case determinations and compliance with Medicare regulatory criteria.
