The motor is usually found beneath the power chair seat and connects to the joystick controller. The controller, in turn, proportionally outputs battery power directly to the motors. Individual differences in function, design and how an owner intends to use the equipment, will typically dictate the kind of motor and the amount of horse power a particular type of power chair will need.

How powerful are wheelchair motors?

Standard-sized electric wheelchairs usually have dual, in-line motors and require moderate amounts of horse power. They are best suited for routine indoor use by riders of average height who weigh up to 300 pounds. Suggested model:² MPV5

Bariatric sized electric wheelchairs require larger motors for heavy-duty propulsion and power. With increased traction, greater torque and more horse power than standard electric power chairs, bariatric mobility chairs capably support individuals weighing upwards from 301 to 600 pounds.
