Learn about the power wheelchair motor and the role it plays in keeping power chair users mobile all day long.
Power Chair Motors Enable Independent Mobility
Manual wheelchairs aren't the easiest aid to use for someone with limited upper body strength. Wheelchair owners must either exert their own arm strength or rely on someone else to push the chair for them
But a motorized wheelchair requires virtually no physical effort at all. Powered by battery-operated motors, electric wheelchairs are self-propelling and enable their users to get around much more independently and more easily.
Different Mobility Needs Require Different Motors1
The motor is usually found beneath the power chair seat and connects to the joystick controller. The controller, in turn, proportionally outputs battery power directly to the motors. Individual differences in function, design and how an owner intends to use the equipment, will typically dictate the kind of motor and the amount of horse power a particular type of power chair will need.
How powerful are wheelchair motors?
Standard-sized electric wheelchairs usually have dual, in-line motors and require moderate amounts of horse power. They are best suited for routine indoor use by riders of average height who weigh up to 300 pounds. Suggested model:2 MPV5
Bariatric sized electric wheelchairs require larger motors for heavy-duty propulsion and power. With increased traction, greater torque and more horse power than standard electric power chairs, bariatric mobility chairs capably support individuals weighing upwards from 301 to 600 pounds. Suggested models:2 Teknique HD6, Teknique XHD.
Note: The Teknique XHD heavy duty power chair supports up to 450 pounds. The Teknique HD6 bariatric electric wheelchair supports up to 600 pounds.
Engineered to function for years of continued use, all Hoveround power wheelchairs utilize reliable and powerful motors for enhanced stability, precision handling, and excellent maneuverability.
