29 Random Acts of Kindness for Seniors

You don't always need money to make a difference to someone else! Random acts of kindness will brighten your day — but the thoughtful things you can do unexpectedly for others can change their entire week! Make a point to do one of these every day...they won't cost you a penny and can fill your heart with joy.

Random Acts of Kindness

Using Your Words

  1. Smile and say hello to everyone in your path. Your smile could turn someone's day around!
  2. Compliment a stranger —what they are wearing, what they did or their great smile.
  3. Tell a mom out shopping with her kids that she's doing a great job (and that her children are adorable!). We all need to hear we're doing a great job sometimes!
  4. Thank a police officer for his or her service.
  5. Go sit and talk with a friend who has been having a tough time.
  6. Whenever you introduce someone, tell others something great about him or her.
  7. When you receive great service, thank the person — and then tell their superior (or write an email to corporate, if fitting).
  8. Acknowledge every worker you meet in the same friendly manner — from the corporate CEO to the custodian to the security guard.
  9. Ask someone random how his or her day is — and listen.
  10. Call a person who has made a difference in your life and tell them just that.
  11. Have a conversation with the homeless person you would normally pass by.

Using Your Skills

  1. Cook a casserole or favorite recipe for a new mom.
  2. Make and hand out “thank you” cards to cashiers for their service.
  3. Send a loved one a “thinking of you” note.
  4. Leave a gift of something you made (scarf, picture frame, or other craft) on a neighbor's porch.
  5. Make bookmarks and hand them out at the library or book store.
  6. Offer your skills to someone who can benefit from them — whether that is organizing their cupboard, helping them declutter, doing their taxes, helping them write a resume, decorating their living room or anything else you can do!
  7. Make cookies and bring them for the staff at your next doctor or dental appointment.
  8. Pass out the recipe for your signature dish to those who have loved it.
  9. Make time for the person in trouble who everyone else is just ignoring and passing by.
  10. Pick up litter around your neighborhood or in the park.

With What You Have

  1. Offer your postal carrier a nice hot or cold beverage, depending on the season.
  2. Donate your used items to a charitable organization.
  3. Surprise someone who has expressed how much they like something of yours (like a scarf or piece of jewelry) and give it to them!
  4. Donate your old eyeglasses and hearing aids.
  5. Let someone go in front of you in the line at the grocery store.
  6. Leave coupons for items you don't need next to the item for someone else.
  7. Donate your used books to a shelter.
  8. Keep extra sets of gloves and hats with you to hand out to the homeless or those in need when it's cold outside.
