Positive Affirmations to Help you Deal with Chronic Pain and Illness

You've heard about the power of positive thinking, right? Sometimes that's easier said than done — but research suggests that those dealing with chronic pain can benefit by using positive affirmations to cope. Keep this list handy and make it a point to think positive every day!

Helpful Hints to Deal With Chronic Pain

When you're dealing with a chronic illness such as rheumatoid arthritis, COPD, diabetes, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome or a plethora of other conditions, each day can be a struggle. In addition to working with your physician to manage pain, be sure to use these positive affirmations to help you through.

  • Find a place inside where there's joy, and the joy will burn out the pain. – Joseph Campbell
Some days may be more difficult than others, but seek out the joy in your life and focus on that. Consider keeping a daily journal of the top three things (or more!) that bring you joy each day.
  • One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain. – Bob Marley
Music has been shown to improve mood and help manage pain, so personalize your own playlist and listen to it often.
  • Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine. – Lord Byron
The more you laugh, the more laughter will enter your life. And when you're laughing, you're not thinking about the pain, right?
  • Pain is inevitable, but misery is optional. We cannot avoid pain, but we can avoid joy. ~ Tim Hansel
Choose to surround yourself with joy and dwell instead on the good things instead of succumbing to being miserable.
  • The strongest people are not those who show strength in front of us but those who win battles we know nothing about. – Unknown
You are stronger than you may realize, and exercise can make you stronger. It's important to always remind yourself of that.
  • The secret of learning to be sick is this: Illness doesn't make you less of what you were. You are still you. – Tony Snow
It's difficult to not let the pain take over. You are more than your illness...so try to remember all the things that make you the wonderful person you are!

For Days You're Feeling Hopeless

On those days when the pain takes over, it's easy to lose hope – but having hope is what keeps you going, so be sure to remember these affirmations when you're at a low point.

  • When you exhaust all possibilities remember this: You haven't. – Thomas Edison
You may not think there's anything you can do to help, but keep trying. Talk to loved ones, seek out a therapist, join online forums and consider other means to help manage your pain (perhaps a power wheelchair or mobility scooter to help regain your independence).
  • The moment you're ready to quit is usually the moment right before the miracle happens. – Unknown
Sometimes, you have to see the darkness to appreciate the light. Have hope that there's something good waiting for you around the next corner.
  • Everything is working out for my highest good. Out of this situation only good will come. I am safe. – Louise Hay
Trust that good things will happen. You may not know when or how, but look on the bright side to keep your spirits up and ready for the good.
  • In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision. – Dalai Lama
Wise words! Line your thinking with positive thoughts and envision yourself on a positive journey by whatever means possible.
  • Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow. – Helen Keller
The brightness is there; you just have to place yourself in the right spot to be able to see it.
  • Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you'll start having positive results. – Willie Nelson
The glass can either be half empty or half full. It's rather uncanny how if you train yourself to be accustomed to thinking positive how much easier it will be to see the good stuff.
  • You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind. – Joyce Meyer
If you are always thinking negatively, that's all that you will see...and live.

When You're Feeling Inadequate

We all have days when we're feeling down on ourselves, but it's important to replace those thoughts with positive, uplifting ideas.

  • I long to accomplish a noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble. – Helen Keller
When you're dealing with pain, it's difficult to do everyday tasks – let alone monumental ones. But know that even the little things matter.
  • The question is not how to survive, but how to thrive with passion, compassion, humor and style. – Maya Angelou
Despite life's challenges, you can indeed come out on top when you change your mindset and how you deal with them.
  • Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. – Theodore Roosevelt
You are not Superman, and no one expects you to be. You are capable and able to do things, just maybe not always in the ways you had envisioned.
