A face-to-face mobility examination, performed in a doctor's office, is one of the most important steps towards taking back your life. With a mobility aid (such as a motorized wheelchair, or an electric scooter), you may reduce risks for falls, resolve mobility deficits and expand your independence.
Like your primary physician, a certified mobility specialist is also an important part of your mobility care team. Whether working closely with your doctor, providing mobility evaluations, or advising your equipment supplier, a specialist's participation in your care is essential.
At the very least, certified mobility professionals may be:1
- Trained to assess the needs of mobility impaired patients
- Authorized to recommend, order and/or supply mobility equipment2
- Skilled in the proper use of mobility assistive technologies
Your continued independence requires dedicated care from a qualified mobility specialist.

2 Professional capacities of mobility specialists may vary. For example, a mobility specialist who is described as an RTS may be certified as an ATP, with the authority to provide personal mobility equipment to a patient, as ordered and prescribed by a licensed clinician. But, other mobility specialists may only be authorized to offer general recommendations, or refer patients to licensed providers for further assessment.
