A face-to-face mobility examination, performed in a doctor's office, is one of the most important steps towards taking back your life. With a mobility aid (such as a motorized wheelchair, or an electric scooter), you may reduce risks for falls, resolve mobility deficits and expand your independence.

Like your primary physician, a certified mobility specialist is also an important part of your mobility care team. Whether working closely with your doctor, providing mobility evaluations, or advising your equipment supplier, a specialist's participation in your care is essential.

  • Trained to assess the needs of mobility impaired patients

Certified Mobility Professionals

There are a number of accreditation boards for medical and mobility professionals. RESNA, the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America is one such organization with a well-established reputation in mobility specialist certification.

RESNA-certification ensures that the mobility technologist has demonstrated competence and adheres to a consistent standard of excellence in patient care. Individuals who have been certified by RESNA are identified by various job descriptions and titles, including:

  • Assistive Technology Professional (ATP)
  • Occupational Therapist (OT)
  • Physical Therapist (PT)
  • Rehabilitation Technology Supplier (RTS)
  • Seating and Mobility Specialist (SMS)
