What’s the Difference Between a Power Wheelchair & an Electric Wheelchair?
Power wheelchair and electric wheelchair mean the same thing.
All power wheelchairs and electric wheelchairs are actually battery powered. The name variations stem not from product differences, but from the various power mobility product companies as well as the different terms wheelchair users and shoppers use.
The terms power wheelchair and electric wheelchair both refer to battery powered wheelchairs. Mobility products are designed for individuals with severe mobility limitations. Personal mobility vehicles enable individuals to perform their daily activities with ease. Most are equipped with a joystick controller for steering, have four to six wheels and are battery-powered. Different power mobility product companies have different standard and optional features on their wheelchair products. For example, all Hoveround electric and power wheelchairs come standard with:
- Round frame design for superior maneuverability indoors and out.
- Hoveround Custom Fit® - a customized power or electric wheelchair modified to your unique physical proportions and your mobility needs.
- Light-weight, comfort-contoured seat developed for your all-day comfort needs.
Most electric wheelchair companies offer optional features based on the user’s unique needs. For example, additional options on the Hoveround MPV 5® wheelchair include adjustable armrests, legrests, footrests and a power lift for adjusting the seat height.
