What's the Difference Between a Power Wheelchair & an Electric Wheelchair?

Power wheelchair, power chair and electric wheelchair mean the same thing. Just as electric scooter, power scooter and mobility scooter refer to a scooter.

The term electric wheelchair may lead you to believe a wheelchair is powered by electricity. All power wheelchairs (electric wheelchairs) are actually battery-powered. The name variations stem not from product differences, but from the various power mobility product companies as well as the different terms electric wheel chair users and shoppers use. At Hoveround, we use the terms electric wheel chairs, power wheelchairs and power chairs.

The terms power wheelchair, power chair and electric wheelchair all refer to a motorized wheel chair. Mobility products such as motorized wheel chairs are designed for individuals with mobility limitations. Personal mobility devices enable individuals to perform their daily activities with ease. Most are equipped with a joystick controller for steering, have four to six wheels and are battery-powered. Different power mobility product companies have different standard and optional features on their power wheelchair products. For example, all Hoveround electric wheel chairs come standard with:

  • Round frame design for superior maneuverability indoors and out.
  • Hoveround Custom Fit® (customized power chair modified to your unique physical proportions).
  • Pressure Relief System Seat with inner springs and four and a half inches of foam for superior comfort and support.

Most power chair companies offer optional features based on the user's unique needs. For example, additional options on the Hoveround MPV 5® electric wheel chair include adjustable armrests, legrests, footrests and a power lift for adjusting the seat height. Electric scooters have less options for customization.
