How Do I make the Most of My Hoveround?

Our customers are amazed at the freedom that comes with their Hoveround electric wheelchair or mobility scooter. It’s hard to imagine the difference unless you have experienced a mobility challenge yourself or know people who have. For over 16 years, we have worked with customers, physicians, caregivers and loved ones to solve mobility challenges. As you can imagine, our work has provided countless insights on how Hoveround owners can get the most of their newfound mobility. Here are a variety of simple changes you can make to your home for even greater mobility, comfort and peace of mind:

Wheelchair & Scooter Accessible Entrances

Make sure you have at least two wheel chair / scooter accessible entrances in your home. This way, if one of the exits is blocked, you can still exit your home in your electric wheelchair or mobility scooter in the event of an emergency.

Ramps for Easier Navigation in Your Scooter or Power Chair

Depending on your home, it may be necessary to install a ramp for easier entrance and exit to and from your home. Hoveround offers a number of power chair ramps to provide safer movement in these cases. We also have threshold ramps to help you roll over uneven door thresholds in your motorized wheelchair or scooter.

Maneuvering Your Motorized Wheelchair or Scooter through Door Frames

Hoveround electric wheel chairs and scooters fit easily through standard home entrances, which are normally thirty-six inches wide. In bariatric cases that require wider chair specifications than our standard power chair models, you may need to increase the width of the door frame. In that case, you can purchase hinges to increase the doorway width by eliminating the extra space that an open door uses. You can call our Hoveround Aftermarket Specialists at 1.800.701.3021 for further details. Completely removing an interior door can also increase the doorway width by a few inches.

Getting Up & Down Stairs in Your Electric Wheelchair

If you live in a multi-level home, a stair lift may be necessary to gain access to different levels in your home. A stair lift is a motorized platform that is mounted to the wall. It is fairly large though and it may not be suitable for all homes. Call our Hoveround Mobility Specialists at 1.800.701.3021 to have them recommend the best dealer for your needs.

Easiest Floor Surfaces for Your Mobility Scooter or Power Chair

Since the wheels on an electric wheelchair can catch on area rugs and throw mats, we recommend removing these type of floor coverings. The best flooring surfaces are tile, linoleum, hardwood floors or wall-to-wall short pile carpet (such as Berber).

Navigating around Your Furniture in Your Electric Wheelchair

The average Hoveround electric wheelchair requires only thirty inches of space to move ¬¬through an entrance. It requires only thirty inches for turning a corner such as in a hallway or doorway. To get the most out of Hoveround’s compact mobility, move furniture against the walls to make more floor space in the center of the room. You can then form a pathway to travel upon and remove any unnecessary objects.

Opening Doors with Ease from your Hoveround Scooter or Power Chair

Using a lever door handle instead of a doorknob makes it easier and more comfortable to open the door. A doorknob requires more leverage and is harder to grab and turn. Lever door handles can be purchased at hardware stores and are easy to install. Adding a thirty six inch string to a door handle will allow a wheelchair user to pull the door closed when exiting a room. If you are interested in a Hoveround grabber, call our Hoveround Mobility Specialists at 1.800.771.6565 to order yours.

Effortless Reaching in your Electric Wheelchair & Scooter

For easier access in and out of an electric wheelchair, handrails or “grab bars” can be installed in places like the sides of the toilet, shower and next to the bed. Automated or remote control devices that allow you to turn lights, fans, intercom system and other appliances on and off can also be helpful lifestyle aids. We also offer Hoveround grabbers which can be used to help you reach various objects. Just call our Hoveround Mobility Specialists at 1.800.701.3021 if you are interested.

Easier Bathroom Navigation

Installing rubber mats on the bathroom floor as well as in the bathtub or shower can help prevent falls on wet surfaces. If possible, renovating the bathroom to include a pedestal sink and a taller, narrower toilet will also increase the ease of access for an electric wheelchair user. A hand-held, flexible shower head and lever-handed faucets are also more convenient. The hot water heater should be set to 120 degrees or less to avoid accidental burning.

Power Chair Mobility in the Kitchen

Appliances with front controls and side-by-side refrigerator / freezers are easier to access from your electric wheelchair. You can also keep a surge protector on your counter for an easily accessible electric outlet. In addition, a rolling cart will help you carry and transport items easily from your electric wheelchair.

Covered Parking for Safer Entry / Exit with your Hoveround

A covered parking area and walkway are ideal for protecting your Hoveround power chair if you need to get in and out of the house during bad weather. There should also be adequate space in the parking area to allow room for the electric wheelchair to be transported with a lift, ramp or trailer. We also offer a variety of lifts and ramps that are built to work with Hoveround power chairs and mobility scooters.
